Earthbag Construction: Foundations

The foundations are one of the most fundamental, and often overlooked part of an earthbag structure. Foundations have to:

  • Spread the load of the walls and roof evenly over the ground.
  • Hold the building together as one unit.
  • Keep the building dry from water which can rise from the ground.

The foundation trench has to go down to undisturbed ground to either bedrock or well compressed subsoil. You should also ensure it goes below the level to which frost can form during the winter.
